To study the dynamics of fatigue-crack propagation, a special cyclic-loading stage was constructed for the scanning-electron microscope in order to utilize its high resolution and field depth. This servocontrolled electrohydraulic device can apply 1000 lb of force statically or 850 lb of tensile force dynamically at rates of up to 5 Hz. Operated at television scan rates, the tool allows the dynamic study of crack-tip plasticity through video recording.
