Storage vessel for ship transport of liquefied gas

OSTI ID:6929298
Chicago Bridge and Iron Co. developed and improved self-supporting tank design for LNG tankers which features added safety, minimizes the concentration of stresses in the ship's hull, and allows the ready installation of insulation. The tank generally consists of an enclosed circular metal shell with an upwardly projecting lower walled portion joined at its bottom edge to the ship-hold bottom, transferring the vertical force of the liquid product to the hold bottom. Within the lower walled portion of the tank shell, a metal secondary bottom is positioned above the hold bottom, with a primary bottom positioned above it. A load-bearing insulation system is positioned between the secondary bottom and the ship-hold bottom. Each of the tank bottoms is usually constructed of thin metal and functions as a leaktight liner. The tank shell and primary and secondary bottoms should be constructed of cryogenically safe metals, but the new design allows the use of conventional carbon steel for the ship's hull. In the event of a primary-bottom failure, the cryogenic liquid will flow into the space below the primary bottom where it will be restrained from further flow by the secondary bottom and kept from damaging the ship-hold bottom by the insulation system.
