Plots columns coated with Al{sub 2}O{sub 3}/KCl are a good tool for separating light hydrocarbons (C{sub 1} to C{sub 10}). A disadvantage of these types of columns, however, is their sensitivity for water. Water deactivates the Al{sub 2}O{sub 3} which results in shortened retention times. This is a reversible process resulting in a continuous shift of retention times, which makes these types of columns unattractive for us in process GCs. This article deals with a column configuration to evade this problem.
