Oil shale development activities in the western US continued to decline in 1985. In general, project developments proceeded at a slower pace, and some projects were suspended or dropped, reflecting the uncertain economic forecasts. Advances have been reported in the direct use of oil shale in industry and agriculture, in addition to its use as a base for synthetic fuel. 1 figure.
