Magnetic moments of the 2/sup +//sub 1/ states of even Ni isotopes

The magnetic moments of the first 2/sup +/ excited states of even Ni isotopes have been measured using the large dynamic magnetic fields acting on fast ions traversing thin magnetized iron foils. The results obtained are g (/sup 5/8Ni,2/sup +//sub 1/) = -0.06 +- 0.13, g (/sup 6/0Ni,2/sup +//sub 1/) = 0.09 +- 0.12, g (/sup 6/2Ni,2/sup +//sub 1/) = + 0.33 +- 0.12, and g (/sup 6/4Ni,2/sup +//sub 1/) = + 0.45 +- 0.12. These results agree with shell model calculations presented here and contradict previous calculations.
