Wholetree hardwood, softwood chips and different pulping processes

Journal Article · · Pulp Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6927769

The article reviews the results of tests carried out to find the potential uses of whole-tree chips (WTC) and covers: hardwood WTC in kraft pulping; hardwood WTC in semichemical pulping; softwood WTC in kraft pulping; and WTC in TMP production and in sulfite processes. The results show that there is high potential for use of WTC in: hardwood kraft; hardwood semichemical; and softwood high yield kraft; there is medium potential in softwood low-yield unbleached kraft; there is low potential in softwood low yield bleached kraft using a continuous digester; and there is very low potential for WTC use in TMP production and in sulfite and bisulfite processes.
