Shredded tires for electric generation

The long-term effect of burning a blend of shredded tires and coal on the equipment and operation of the Elk River Station will only be determined when an adequate tire supply can be procured at a price which is low enough to economically justify the operation of this Station. The current price of power in the UPA system and the MAPP system dictates that the maximum price that can be paid for the shredded tire material in order to justify the base loaded operation of this Station at the 50% tire to coal fuel blend is about $15.00/ton. Negotiations with several organizations for the supply of shredded tires are underway. The initial indications are that shredded tires should be available for a price that would permit the continued operation of this Station. The question still remains whether a tire supplier can produce a large volume of shredded tires that will meet the 2'' particle size specification.
