Microbial desulfurization of pyritic coal. [Thiobacillus thiooxidans and ferrobacillus ferrooxidans]

A process has been developed to desulphurise the pyritic coal of Assam Coal Mines utilizing a mixed flora of Thiobacillus and Ferrobacillus. Different media have been studied and effect of addition of sodium chooride is discussed. The micro-organisms have been cultured from acidic mine waters and a recovery of up to 70 to 90% pyritic sulphur and 20 to 40% total sulphur is achieved.
