The overall defects in LaMnO[sub 3+[delta]] have been studied by powder neutron diffraction, electron diffraction, and high resolution transmission electron microscopy on a sample with the formal composition LaMnO[sub 3.158]. Neutron diffraction, in combination with chemical analysis, indicates that the actual composition is La[sub 0.95]Mn[sub 0.95]O[sub 3]. The electron microscopy results indicate that no defect clustering or crystallographic shear occurs. It is concluded that the defect chemistry of LaMnO[sub 3+[delta]] must be described with randomly distributed La and Mn vacancies in equal amounts.
