Oxygen adsorption at 450/sup 0/C on alumina-supported Sn/Pt catalysts of various metal contents and proportions, prereduced in hydrogen at 510/sup 0/C, oxidized the tin from a divalent to a tetravalent state and the platinum from the zero-valent to the divalent state. Oxygen did not adsorb irreversibly on tin at room temperature, but its adsorption on platinum at 23/sup 0/ depended on the amount of tin present as well as on the platinum amount. This phenomenon is interpreted as due to a metallic influence to which a fraction of the tin atoms in the vicinity of platinum atoms are subjected and which causes hydrogen atoms localized at such tin atoms to react with oxygen. Other possible hypotheses, including oxygen spillover, are discussed.
