Hydrogen evolves by illumination of suspensions of platinized CdS powder in aqueous solutions of formic acid, formaldehyde, and methanol. The organic compounds are oxidized. The reaction rate is high at low pH for formic acid and at high pH for methanol. The reactivities of these compounds on platinized CdS powder at various pHs have good correlation with their photoanodic reactions on a CdS electrode. 6 figures.
