Electronic ballast lamps: new line, more debate

General Electric and GTE Sylvania are marketing lamps designed for use with electronic ballasts. Special lamps were developed because the higher frequency at which electronic ballasts operate can cause the ends of standard fluorescents to blacken, and can eventually shorten the life of standard lamps as much as 50%. Changes in the new lamps alter the pressure of the fill gas, the cathode mount structure, and the internal coating. Electronic ballasts operate at a frequency of about 25 kilohertz compared to the 60 hertz of standard ballasts. GE and GTE spokesmen compare their products' specifications and performance.
