Detection of C/sub 3/H/sub 2/ emission in the radio galaxy centaurus A (= NGC 5128)

Broad, weak emission has been detected in the 1(10)-1(01) transition of the hydrocarbon ring molecule C/sub 3/H/sub 2/ in the nuclear region of the radio galaxy Centaurus A. These data, and observations of an absorption profile seen against the nucleus of Centaurus A, are together consistent with the presence of C/sub 3/H/sub 2/ uniformly distributed in a rigid rotating nuclear disk, about 4 kpc in radius. If the excitation temperature is 10 K, then the abundance relative to H/sub 2/ in the nuclear disk is in the range 10 to the -9th to 10 to the -8th. 14 references.
