China has vast hydroelectric potential

Journal Article · · Electr. World; (United States)

Tremendous opportunities exist for hydroelectric development in China. With a theoretical potential of 580 GW, corresponding to an annual production of 5 x 10/sup 12/ kWh, China leads the world in water-power resources. To date China has developed only 2 1/2% of that potential. But the growing demand for energy being created by the current modernization program calls for an unprecedented rate of development of these water-power resources, and China is seeking the cooperation of the world's developed countries to achieve this goal. Hydroelectric installations today have a combined capacity of 14,600 MW, not including installations below 500 kW. This is already about 90 times the amount that existed before the birth of New China, in 1949.
