Role of cores and core analysis in evaluation of formation damage

Conference · · Soc. Pet. Eng. AIME, Pap.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6919928

Formation damage can occur at any stage in the life of a well--from initial drilling until final abandonment. Damage results in productivity impairment and occurs from (1) introduction of solids by drilling mud and fluids subsequently injected, (2) water block, (3) clay hydration with subsequent swelling and/or clay particle migration, and (4) mechanical movement of sand into the well bore. Correction of the damage with minimum expenditure requires knowledge of the damage mechanism and selection of a suitable remedial procedure. Studies made with formation cores provide data for analyzing and diagnosing the likely cause of formation damage, developing remedial treatments most effective in restoring productivity, and selecting materials and procedures to eliminate or minimize the damage in subsequent wells.
