Selection of carbons as electrode materials

Conference · · Proc. - Electrochem. Soc.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6918932
An in situ (cyclic voltametry) and an ex situ (microcalorimetry) technique were used to study the stability against chemical attack of different, commercially available carbon materials with a wide range of physical and chemical properties. Cyclic voltammograms of PTFE-bonded carbons at 411 K in phosphoric acid electrolyte and microcalorimetric data obtained at 313 K (using KOH and H/sub 3/PO/sub 4/ electrolytes) revealed corresponding results indicating the usefulness of the described methods in the preselection of carbon materials. Carbon corrosion was observed to depend on the carbon material properties and carbon treatment methods as well as on the presence of catalyst and on the type of electrolyte.
