The technique of McMillan-Rowell tunneling spectroscopy, extended by a method of proximity junctions to poorly oxidizing materials, is applied to study electron-phonon coupling in Nb/sub 1-x/Zr/sub x/ at x=0.25, corresponding to the maximum T/sub c/ in the Nb-Zr alloy system. The resulting ..cap alpha../sup 2/F(..omega..) function provides lambda=1.3 for the alloy, and indicates that the primary benefit to superconductivity upon alloying arises from softening of the effective phonon spectrum.
