The proliferation of computer wares aimed at exploration and production is evident in the number of advertisements in industry publications and the number and types of exhibitors at any trade show or conference. An obvious concern in how to put it all together and communicate machine-to-machine and program-to-program. Efforts to establish and refine a standard format for exchanging geologic and petroleum data continue to progress under the auspices of The American Association of Petroleum Geologists, through its Database Standards Subcommittee. This article delves into some of the concepts and processes involved in developing such a standard and in gaining industry acceptance. Current status, ongoing efforts, and future directions of the so-called AAPG-A format are outlined.
