This patent describes a method for the desulfurization of fuel gases resulting from the incomplete combustion of sulfur containing hydrocarbons. It comprises: creating oxygen ion vacancies in a lanthanide oxide and reacting the fuel gases with the lanthanide oxide containing the oxygen ion vacancies whereby the amount of sulfur in the gases is reduced.
