The Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) Policy Act of 1980 encouraged states to form into compacts that would provide for regional disposal of LLRW. At present, none of these compacts' disposal facilities are licensed or under construction. The LLRW facility that is currently available to receive waste from most of the country is scheduled to close in July 1994 to all but the Southeast Compact and to close completely in January 1996. Therefore, utility LLRW generators may need to consider on-site storage of LLRW until permanent disposal facilities become available.
