Reactor vessel integrity became an important licensing issue with the implementation of 10CFR50, Appendix G. In 1977, the owners of B and W designed reactors were confronted with the problem of projected service lives of less than five years for their reactor vessels. By combining their efforts into the Reactor Vessel Materials Integrity Program, they assured a short-term solution of justifying continued vessel operation to insure vessel integrity for design life. The program has provided a means of resolving normal licensing problems and providing the information and data to address special situations, such as pressurized thermal shock. Current status of the program results indicate that B and W Owners Group reactor vessels will be licensable for their design lives. Also, embrittlement of the reactor vessel core belt region should not restrict plant-life extension.
