An investigation of the interchangeability of Donets and Karaganda coal types in charges for coking
One of the significant features of the Soviet coking industry is a high industrial concentration. In addition to obvious advantages, this factor is also related to certain difficulties. In particular, it is difficult to adopt many progressive methods which could be adopted without particular risk at plants of small capacity. The concentration of a large number of coking plants in the Ukraine resulted in intense utilization of the Donets Coalfield (Donbass) as a fuel supply, which finally led to depletion of reserves of the coal types most valuable for coking: Zh, K and OS. We have significant reserves of coking coal concentrated in the new Kuznetsk, Karaganda and Pechora coalfields. Of particular interest is the Karaganda coalfield, with those coal types which are not produced in the Donbass. Types K and K2 Karaganda coal are characterized by good caking capacity and low sulfur, with a complex petrographic composition; in addition, they are also distinguished by a high degree of mineralization.
