Electric vehicle auxiliary power source evaluation

This report focuses on the electric vehicle auxiliary power system. This involves a collection of devices needed to operate the vehicle, including headlamps, blowers, instrument panel, entertainment equipment, windshield wipers, horn, turn signals, control electronics, etc. These devices are traditionally connected to a common 12 vdc power bus. In an EV, the traction battery is the prime source of power but this battery is at the wrong voltage level and lacks the regulation required by most auxiliary devices. Hence there is a need for an auxiliary power system. All of the methods for providing auxiliary power that are presently being investigated involve the use of a dc-dc converter whose task is to convert the traction battery voltage to 12 vdc, and to regulate this voltage in the face of traction battery voltage variations. This report addresses three objectives. First, it summarizes the status of currently available dc-dc converters and regulators in terms of the needs and difficulties experienced by in-service electric vehicles. Second, it provides an engineering assessment of these devices to determine whether the technology exists to solve the in-service maintenance and reliability problems. Third, it examines the longer range needs of auxiliary power system design and development. 15 refs., 2 figs., 2 tabs.
