Title: Rhenium, technetium, and tungsten complexes of the 1,2-benzoquinones

Miscellaneous ·
OSTI ID:6909919

The synthesis and characterization of rhenium, technetium, and tungsten complexes containing o-semiquinone or catecholate ligands are reported. The tris-chelated rhenium (VI) catecholate complexes, Re(3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate){sub 3} and Re(tetrachlorocatecholate){sub 3}, have been prepared from photolytic and thermal reactions of dirhenium decacarbonyl and the corresponding benzoquinoes. o-Semiquinone complexes of rhenium were also prepared and include the tetracarbonyl rhenium semiquinone complexes, Re(CO){sub 4} (3,5-di-tert-butylsemiquinone), Re(CO){sub 4} (tetrachlorosemiquinone), Re(CO){sub 4} (9,10-phenanthrenesemiquinone), as well as the dimeric complex, Re(CO){sub 7} (9,10-phenanthrenesemiquinone){sub 2}. The crystal structures and characterization, including magnetic, EPR, spectroscopic, and electrochemical experiments, of Re(3,5-di-tert-butylcatecholate){sub 3}, Re(tetrachlorocatecholate){sub 3}, and Re(CO){sub 7}(9,10-phenanthrenesemiquinone){sub 2} are reported in addition to mechanistic details of this chemistry. The dimeric tungsten(VI) catecholate complex, W{sub 2}(tetrachlorocatecholate){sub 6}, was prepared upon reflux of a toluene solution of tungsten hexacarbonyl and tetrachloro-1,2-benzoquinone. The X-ray structure of this complex is reported in addition to characterization of both the tungsten complex and its molybdenum analogue, Mo{sub 2}(tetrachlorocatecholate){sub 6}, including results of spectroscopic and electrochemical experiments.
