Simultaneous operation of gain- and index-guided lateral modes in twin-stripe laser diode arrays

Twin-stripe laser diodes have been fabricated which exhibit two distinct sets of lateral modes. One is associated with a single-lobe near-field intensity profile corresponding to an effective index-guide centered between the stripes. The other has a double-lobe near-field distribution, each lobe centered under a stripe, corresponding to one of the twin-stripe gain-guided supermodes. A large spectral separation between these two modes, believed to be due to band filling, was also observed.
