The workscope covered in this report is the first step toward the development of an instrument for the on-line measurement of lignin concentration in wood pulp. This first-step program consisted of a series of laboratory measurements of the fluorescence spectra of well-defined pulp samples. The objective of the program was to develop the data base necessary to design a field-testable prototype instrument, to define the range of conditions over which the prototype can be expected to provide satisfactory performance, and to provide the background for interpretation of the results obtained when field testing the prototype.
