The recent need to conserve energy by tightening the envelope of residences and reducing their ventilation rates may lead to an increase in the concentration of pollutants generated indoors. The program was initiated by GRI to assess a desiccant dehumidifier system as a means of reducing indoor-air-pollutant concentrations. Controlled experiments were performed using a commercially available desiccant rotary unit to study the adsorption capability of silica gel and molecular sieve 5A for CO, NO/sub 2/, and SO/sub 2/ air constituents. The values measured establish the range of removal rates of these constiuents for a specific unit design. The molecular sieve demonstrated higher adsorption capabilities for CO, NO/sub 2/, and SO/sub 2/ than did the silica gel. Factors that affect the desorption of the constituents from desiccants include regeneration air temperatures and inlet constituent concentrations. Higher regeneration air temperatures and lower pollutant concentrations favor the regeneration capabilities of desiccants. Silica gel showed better trends of regeneration than did molecular sieve 5A.
