Using x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) techniques, we have investigated the electronic structure and magnetic properties of La{sub 0.7}Sr{sub 0.3}MnO{sub 3} (LSMO) as a function of YBa{sub 2}Cu{sub 3}O{sub 7{minus}{delta}} (YBCO) cap layer thickness. The Mn L{sub 2,3} XAS and XMCD data clearly show that the magnetic properties and electronic structure of the LSMO are adversely affected by the YBCO overlayer caused by cation displacement/exchange that effectively reduces the concentration of the La atoms in the LSMO near the YBCO/LSMO interface. {copyright} {ital 1999 American Institute of Physics.}
