This second annual report highlights research activities in computer science and numerical analysis carried out within the Computation Directorate of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL). Its purpose is to provide a technical introduction to current areas of study and to report on recent progress. Research features a heavy emphasis on multiprocessing. Although multiprocessing plays a major role in nearly every proposed new supercomputer system, much work needs to be done before we can understand how to use it effectively. In addition to multiprocessing studies, strong efforts are continuing in some of the more traditional areas of computer science, particularly numerical methods.
