Electrode well and method of completion

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6904611
A method is described of providing an electrode well for electrical resistance heating of a subterranean formation comprising the steps of: drilling a well into the formation to form a wellbore; inserting at least one electrode member comprising a length of metal electrode tube into the formation by extending the electrode tube from means located at the surface of the formation through the well and diverting the electrode tube generally radially outwardly with respect to the central longitudinal axis of the well at a predetermined position in the formation by axially moving the electrode tube into the formation. The penetration of the electrode tube into the formation is enhanced by hydraulic jetting action, including the pumping of fluid through the electrode tube to the distal end thereof, during the insertion; anchoring the electrode tube in a portion of the well adjacent the formation; and connecting the electrode tube to a source of electrical energy for resistance heating of the formation through electrically conductive contact of the electrode tube with the formation.
