Delay in the escape of high energy solar protons into interplanetary space

Journal Article · · Cosmic Res. (Engl. Transl.); (United States)
OSTI ID:6903772
The first measurements which drew attention to a delay in the arrival of high-energy solar protons at the earth were measurements by ground based neutron monitors. In space, the delay of high-energy solar protons was first discovered by the Prognoz-2 satellite for the solar event on August 7, 1972. Measurements of the delay in the arrival of energetic protons at the earth have yielded identical values for the mean delay time (10-20 min) whether the particles from solar flares have been recorded by neutron monitors or by satellite. For flares on the western hemisphere of the sun, the value of the time delay is independent of the flare longitude.
