It is argued that the soils information the authors have available to apply to environmental issues has depended on the kinds of questions they have asked in soil science. Four periods are identified in the last 150 yr when they asked different kinds of questions. The last period brings the authors back to some of the same questions asked in the first period. The characteristics of these periods are discussed to give them a perspective as their thinking is now changing from soils as an input into crop production to include a greater emphasis on soil processes that mediate global changes.
