String-theoretical and Faddeev-Popov measures for path integrals

The Faddeev-Popov method for dividing out the volume of a local symmetry group from the path integral for a gauge theory is compared to a method analogous to the one used in string theory. The difference between Jacobian determinants which arise in the two approaches is pointed out and the equivalence of the results is explicitly established.
