Thermionic sources for HI-brightness electron beams

This paper surveys the capabilities and limitations of modern thermionic electron sources for producing high emission density ({gt}10 A/cm{sup 2})-high brightness beams. The emphasis is on dispenser cathodes. The capabilities of existing commercial cathodes as well as the potential for future cathode improvements as demonstrated in various prototype structures are described.
