The operating principle of a photodissociation XeF laser (lambda approx. = 350 nm) is discussed. A laser operating on the gas mixture XeF/sub 2/:N/sub 2/(SF/sub 6/): Ar pumped by radiation from an open high-current discharge is described. The maximum lasing duration is 5 ..mu..sec, the maximum output energy is 0.15 J. The vibrational structure of the XeF-molecule transition B/sup 2/..sigma../sup +/ /SUB 1/2/ -- X/sup 2/..sigma../sup +/ /SUB 1/2/ , observed in absorption, luminescence, and stimulated emission, is investigated. The vibrational quantum and the anharmonicity in the upper and lower states are measured: ..omega.. /SUB e/ = 308.7 cm/sup -1/, ..omega.. /SUB e/ x /SUB e/ = 1.44 cm/sup -1/, ..omega.. /SUB e/ = 225.7 cm/sup -1/, ..omega.. /SUB e/ x /SUB e/ = 11.0 cm/sup -1/. The difference between the equilibrium internuclear distances of the XeF molecule is determined for the excited (B) and ground (X) states, namely r /SUB e/ -- r /SUB e/ = 0.33 + or - 0.01 A.
