Advanced composite graphite/PPS valve for high temperature strength and corrosion resistance
A case history of the design, development and production of a graphite fiber reinforced polyphenylene sulfide (Ryton) ball valve is presented. The valve was developed to meet the severe corrosion needs of the chemical process industry as well as the increasing requirements for handling mixed corrosive fluids for pollution control and new energy systems. The high mechanical properties of the graphite reinforced PPS material combined with design features of the valve allow installation into metallic piping systems. Material properties, general fabrication methods, design methods and test results on 2 in. valve are presented. The valve is one of the first graphite fiber based industrial products that can be priced at a lower cost than the exotic metal alloys it replaced.
