Chemical analysis of aerosol samples from the carbonaceous species methods comparison study of 1986. Final report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:6899382
The objective of the study was to determine if modern or recently formed carbon particles, of biogenic origin, constitute an important component of the atmospheric particulate loading. Filter samples collected during the 1986 Carbonaceous Species Methods Comparison Study in Glendora, CA were analyzed for organic and elemental carbon, stable isotopic ratios, hydrocarbon components, fatty acids, and radiocarbon. In addition, filters from Duarte, CA and the Caldecott Tunnel were analyzed for the same species. For the Glendora and Duarte samples, the average values for modern carbon in the hydrocarbon, polar fraction and non-extractable residual (elemental carbon) fractions were 12.6%, 27.1%, and 31.6% respectively for samples collected during day time.
