The production of BuOH from sugars by Clostridium is improved by combining 2 cultures of Clostridium, 1 that produces butyric acid and another that converts butyrate to BuOH. Thus, C. butylicum NRRL B592 and C. pasteurianum NRRL B598 were cultured together in theoglycollate medium containing 2.5% added glucose and a CaCO/sub 3/ chip, to maintain pH, at 37/sup 0/ under anaerobic conditions. The yield of BuOH was 0.70%, compared to 0.46% when C. butylicum was cultured alone.
