This paper discusses how, in the European natural gas market, natural gas supplies are growing, prices now are more competitive and national gas distribution monopolies are weakening. Western Europe used 223.5 billion m{sup 3} of natural gas in 1988, the last year that figures were available. Which was 15.2 percent of total energy used. Gas usage is expected to grow at an annual rate of about 2.25 percent annually. According to the author, additional gas supplies are expected to come from North Sea production of Norway, the UK, Netherlands and from Algeria, Nigeria and possibly the USSR and Iran.
