This patent describes a method of producing an excited dye laser beam comprising a step of exposing a dye of the formula wherein R is hydrogen or linear or branched alkyl of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, n is an integer from 1 to 4 X is an anion, to an exciter laser beam of a frequency and intensity sufficient to cause the dye to lase.
