A new series of mixed-metal cluster compounds containing tantalum and molybdenum was prepared. The new compounds, which may be considered as metal-substituted derivatives of the (Ta/sub 6/Cl/sub 12/)/sup n/sup +// clusters, were ((C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 4/N)/sub 3/((Ta/sub 5/MoCl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/), ((C/sub 4/H/sub 9/)/sub 4/N)/sub 2/((Ta/sub 5/MoCl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/), and ((C/sub 2/H/sub 5/)/sub 4/N)/sub 2/((Ta/sub 4/Mo/sub 2/Cl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/). In all cases the mixed-metal basic cluster units (Ta/sub 5/MoCl/sub 12/)/sup 3 +/ and (Ta/sub 4/Mo/sub 2/Cl/sub 12/)/sup 4 +/ were obtained by reduction of TaCl/sub 5/--MoCl/sub 5/ mixtures with aluminum in fused NaAlCl/sub 4/--AlCl/sub 3/ at 325/sup 0/C. Subsequent ion-exchange and solvent extraction procedures for separation of the individual species from the salt mixture and related clusters of the same structure and net ionic charge were moderately successful. Spectroscopic and magnetic data for the compounds, taking into account possible impurities, indicate that ((Ta/sub 5/MoCl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/)/sup 3 -/ and ((Ta/sub 4/Mo/sub 2/Cl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/ are analogues of ((Ta/sub 6/Cl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/)/sup 4 -/ having 16 metal--metal bonding electrons, and ((Ta/sub 5/MoCl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/)/sup 2 -/ is the analogue of ((Ta/sub 6/Cl/sub 12/)Cl/sub 6/)/sup 3 -/ with 15 bonding electrons.
