In situ combustion intiation

Patent ·
OSTI ID:6895890
This is a process for initiating and establishing in-situ combustion in a carbonaceous stratum. The process consists of placing in an ignition borehole a substantial fuel pack of the following: (1) a loosely packed, combustible, solid ignition material such as charcoal; (2) a material consisting of a normally solid 1-olefin polymer, a trans diene polymer of conjugated diene, and mixtures thereof; and (3) a normally liquid hydrocarbon alone or in admixture with combustible particulate material and/or particulate refractory material. The material in the hole is ignited by a burner lowered into the mass, or a railroad fuse can be dropped onto the fuel pack. Combustion-supporting gas is passed through the ignited fuel pack to thereby heat and ignite a section of the stratum surrounding the burning fuel pack. (13 claims)
