The Union Leroy 51-18 well is located in the western part of the Santa Maria Valley Field of California. The cored interval from this well contains some 338 ft (103 m) of the Miocene Monterey Formation. Previous studies of this section characterized the transition element geochemistry of kerogen concentrates and bitumen and the biomarker distribution of the whole bitumen (3). This paper merges portions of data generated in these previous studies, in an effort to formulate a coherent geochemical model to account for the observed distribution of organically-bound metals (Cr, Mo, Ni and V) and biomarkers (steranes, hopanes and aromatic steroids) in the Monterey Formation. Geochemical studies concerning Monterey crude oils, and source rocks, and geological conclusions are combined in an effort to toward an integrated model to account for the metal and biomarker distributions observed in the Union Leroy 51-18 core.
