Throw-away digits fast retrieval engines: New concepts in data storage and retrieval
- CD PubCo Inc., Calgary, Alberta (Canada)
Although a great deal has been written about emerging optical technologies, the resultant cheap, fast, and large-scale data storage and retrieval techniques are becoming apparent only with increased use. Two of these - throw-away digits and fast retrieval engines - can be a boost to microcomputer mapping and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Only quasi-instant access (minutes if not seconds) of a very generous medium (less than 1.5 Gb, 1,500 Mb) will allow corporate vendor, and government data banks to be used effectively by a growing and increasingly sophisticated user base of professionals and technicians. The ability to put digits on optical media, however, dwarfs the number of applications that effectively retrieve needles from gigabyte haystacks.
