Kerogens from bitumen-extracted New Albany, Green River, and Monterrey shales, a torbanite (Hartley Vale) and a brown coal (Gippsland coal) were isolated using different procedures in three laboratories. All samples were analyzed for metals using X-ray fluorescence (XRF, Munich), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP, UNOCAL) and neutron activation analysis (NAA, WSU). No systematic differences in analyses using NAA, XRF or ICP for identical samples were observed for the elements determined (Cr, Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, V, and Zn). Differences in elemental abundances were observed in kerogens isolated by different techniques, indicating the need for well-documented isolation procedures when comparing trace element data for kerogens. Methods designed to remove residual pyrite from kerogens appear to result in modification of the trace element species in the organic fraction.
