Florida P and L sees declining coal share of utility market

Modular and phased approaches to increasing generating capacity will be preferred by the utilities for the 1990's. FPL's fuel price forecast suggests that utilities remote from coal sources will install natural gas-fired combustion turbine and combustion turbine combined-cycle units to meet increased capacity demands. Eventually these units may be fired with synthetic gas from a coal gasifier. FPL believes that the conversion to coal, however, may be threatened by the introduction of new technologies for combustion of heavy petroleum fractions. The paper discusses the business climate and new capacity decisions. Long-range forecasts are given for the demand for residual fuel oil, natural gas, and coal. The paper also discusses the potential of a new liquid fuel FPL is working on - vacuum bottoms, pitch, and other crude oil heavy fractions that are emulsified into water.
