A subsurface control valve is described for use in a tool string, the subsurface control valve comprising: annular body means defining a central opening therein and having an end adapted for attachment to one of an upper and a lower tool string portion; sleeve means reciprocably disposed in the body means central opening and having an end extending from the body means, the sleeve means end being adapted for attachment to the other of the upper and the lower tool string portions; valve means in operative association with the body means and the sleeve means, the valve means having an open position in which the valve means, body means and sleeve means define a substantially unobstructed flow passage therethrough and a closed position; and valve actuation means responsive to the weight of the lower tool string portion for maintaining the valve in the open position and to relative movement of the upper and lower tool string portions for alternately moving the valve means between the open position and the closed position.
