Timing--geologic and political--in urban oil development, Los Angeles, California

Conference · · Am. Assoc. Pet. Geol., Bull.; (United States)
OSTI ID:6891731
The Los Angeles Basin is one of the most prolific oil and gas basins in the world based on hydrocarbon recovery per cubic foot of sedimentary rock. Approximately 6.7 billion bbl of oil and 6.9 billion Mcf gas have been produced from the oil and gas fields in the basin. The basin currently produces 344,000 bopd from 8,900 wells. This represents 38% of the total daily oil production of California. Approximately 30% of the Los Angeles Basin is within the confines of the city of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles city petroleum code has regulations and ordinances covering drilling and formation evaluation that are unique to oil and gas exploration and field development. These regulations require sophisticated development drilling techniques and productive operations to exploit adequately an oil and gas discovery.
