Resistive drift and Alfven instabilities in sheared magnetic fields
It is shown that, due to finite-..beta.. effects, there exist unstable resistive drift and Alfven eigenmodes in a slab plasma with finite magnetic shear. The corresponding growth rates of both instabilities scale with the electron-ion collision frequency ..nu../sub ei/ as ..nu../sub ei//sup /sup 1///sub 2//.
