Solar energy systems: Technical and policy perspectives

Conference · · Alternative Energy Sources; (United States)
OSTI ID:6891369
Phenomenal industrial growth in the recent past has brought about the realization of the ultimate depletion of the fossil fuel reserves and the associated environmental and social costs. The prospects of solar energy as an alternative energy source have now increased due to a decline in the prospects of nuclear breeder reactors and the uncertainty in the development of fusion processes. This has increased the scientific awareness of the importance of harnessing the non-nuclear, inexhaustible and renewable resource of solar energy. The solar thermal systems and the photovoltaic processes have been emerging and are developing in their initial stages. Some of the alternative energy resources like coal and nuclear power have their own drawbacks and limitations. Structural changes in modern industrialized world are seen in relation to the economic growth and energy consumption. A low energy society scenario using renewable energy resource of solar energy is visualized and presented in this paper.
